Preparing Your Child for Primary One

The transition from kindergarten into Primary School is a major milestone for children. Pre-school teachers and parents begin to worry about whether children are ready, about whether they will cope? Do they know how to do problem sums? Can they write compositions? How can we best help children acquire the necessary skills in the crucial months before making the transition? During this highly interactive course we will explore ways to help children cope with the following:

• Social challenges (e.g. making new friends / getting used to new teachers)
• Physical challenges (e.g. going without a nap, longer hours)
• Emotional challenges (e.g. adjusting to a new environment and teachers, accepting new rules)
• Academic challenges (e.g. coping with more work /more difficult work)
  Participants will be advised on how best to support children in key areas of the curriculum so that they will be fully prepared for their new school environment. In addition, we will look at the STELLAR programme and how this works in schools

Many useful and practical suggestions will be given as to how to help with:

• Communication, Language & Literacy – including reading, phonemic awareness, grammar and writing
• Primary Maths – including many useful maths games and activities which can be used in school or at home.
• Knowledge & Understanding of the World
• Encouraging greater independence in all areas

• Thursdays 6.30pm - 9.30pm
• 18th, 25th August, 1st, 15th, 22nd September
• Each Course is $450 + GST (materials included). Special rate of $375 + GST ($401.25) for group registration for 3 or more participants is available.
