Nursery 1 (2 to 3 years old)

With a strong focus on hands-on learning experiences, our Nursery 1 children enjoy a wonderfully varied and creative programme which enables them to learn at their own pace. The main areas of our curriculum for Nursery 1 children are:

Speaking and Listening

Creative Development

The World Around Us

Social Development and
Physical Development.

Within each of these broad curriculum areas, there is a wide range of activities for the children to take part in to ensure that they get a balanced and interesting programme. As with all our classes at Lorna Whiston Pre-School, activities are taught bi-lingually; that is to say there is an English language teacher and a Mandarin language teacher in each class, both guiding the children so that they are immersed in the two languages naturally.

Above all our Nursery 1 programmes aim to capture the excitement and adventure of learning so that coming to school each day becomes something each child looks forward to.

Nursery 2 (3 to 4 years old)

There are six main curriculum areas for our Nursery 2 children. These are

Communication, Language and Literature (both English and Mandarin)
Mathematics
Knowledge and Understanding of the World (includes science, history, geography, social studies)
Creative Development (includes music, speech and drama, art and craft, cookery)
Personal, Social and Emotional Development
Physical Development

Our Nursery 2 students enjoy a fun-filled learning programme that is carefully balanced and varied. They are placed on an individualised reading programme and have their first exposure to phonics during the Nursery 2 year. Early maths and number skills are introduced and reinforced through practical, concrete experiences to ensure a firm understanding of fundamental concepts, and the children are given regular opportunities to explore the world around them and to be creative. Our Nursery 2 children are gently encouraged to become more independent and to develop self-help skills that will help them to become more effective learners. They are encouraged to take turns, show kindness to others and share with their friends.
