of Instruction
A wide
range of modes of instruction are used at Lorna Whiston EAL School
to enhance students’ learning.
Using a variety of modes of instruction in this way helps us to
accommodate
different learning needs and styles.
The modes of instruction used at Lorna Whiston EAL School include:
Whole class instruction: students will practise language skills in a highly integrated, communicative fashion while learning content such as language, science and mathematics.
Small group instruction: there will be times when students will be broken off into small groups to work on task-based activities that require comprehending, producing, manipulating, or interacting in authentic language. Such activities will tend to focus principally on meaning, rather than form.
One to one instruction and support: staff will be available at all times to give students one to one support in both academic and non-academic areas.
Self study periods: students will have the opportunity to study independently using our wide range of language learning support and reference materials. They will also have access to computers, the internet and audio-visual aids. These self-study periods will be supervised by staff who will be available to give support to students where necessary.
Guest Speakers: from time to time guest speakers will be invited to come and give presentations and talks to our EAL students.
Project-based learning: from time to time, students will be involved
in project-based learning that will encourage them to work collaboratively
with their peers and will also provide opportunities for self-directed
learning.
