What should I know about Lorna Whiston Schools?
Lorna Whiston Schools have been established for 27 years
and are well known for being at the forefront of English
language education in Singapore. We have three
modern, well-equipped and student-centred language schools,
all conveniently located near public transport facilities.
The Lorna Whiston EAL School is for students from all
over Asia who speak English as a foreign language. Whether
you are looking for a short intensive programme, a more
long-term general English language programme, or a course
that prepares you for entry into Singapore schools, we
have a range of programmes to suit your
needs.
At Lorna Whiston, you will encounter a friendly and challenging
learning environment focused on producing confident and
proficient users of the English language. After being given
an initial placement test, you will be guided by our team
of dedicated, experienced and fully qualified native English
speaking teachers from the UK, Australia, New Zealand and
Canada.
Our EAL programmes have been specifically designed by our
team of professionals to suit the language needs of Asian
students. Classes are conducted using activities that reflect
real life situations, ensuring students gain the confidence
and ability to function both inside and outside the classroom.
Teaching Methods
What will it be like in class?
Lorna Whiston classes are structured but fun! At the end
of the day, you won’t want to go home! We teach you
the language that you will need to communicate effectively
in the real world. Furthermore, because we work closely
with local schools, we have the expertise to prepare students
for Singapore school examinations.
Research has shown that students learn best when they are
motivated and when learning is fun. Thus students at Lorna
Whiston don’t spend all day behind a book or filling
in the blanks on a worksheet. Classes at Lorna Whiston
are interactive. That means you will learn in an active
way, share your ideas, join in the learning activities
and challenge yourself. You set your goals; we help you
to reach them!
Skills
What am I going to learn?
Students come to us with a wide variety of needs and objectives.
Some want to learn basic communication skills over their
summer vacation period, whilst others want an intensive
programme of study that will prepare them to take the entrance
examinations for Singapore schools. When students enrol
with us, we discuss with them very carefully what their
needs are: we then design programmes to suit their needs.
Each of our programmes covers all four of the main communication
areas: speaking, listening, reading and writing. In addition,
we build vocabulary and grammar skills so that students
have the tools to communicate effectively and accurately
in English.
